We serve both commercial and residential properties in Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas, including Black Forest, Fountain, and Manitou Springs.
The mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) and the pine engraver beetle (Ips pini) are two types of beetles that have been causing trouble for trees in El Paso County, Colorado.
This native beetle primarily targets pine trees, particularly ponderosa, lodgepole, and limber pines. It can also infest bristlecone and piñon pines, along with some ornamental varieties. Signs that these beetles are around include pitch tubes, boring dust, and changes in foliage color. While insecticides can help, they need to be applied before the beetles strike. To prevent infestations, it's important to encourage healthy tree growth, clear away freshly cut wood, and make sure the trees have enough water.
This beetle mainly infests ponderosa pine trees, and reports of damage from it increased in El Paso County back in 2011. The Colorado State Forest Service has noted that logs with mountain pine beetle larvae can be treated in different ways to eliminate the developing beetles before they hatch. The mountain pine beetle is a native insect found in the western North American forests, often referred to as the Black Hills beetle. In 2023, around 3,100 acres were affected statewide. The pine engraver beetle, which is small and reddish-brown to black, can also be managed by removing freshly cut materials, using insecticides, and promoting strong tree growth. Treatment options include grinding or chipping infested wood.
Trunk and soil injection treatments are highly effective for managing tree pests, insects, and diseases. These injections are both environmentally and economically friendly, often requiring only one treatment for an entire season. Soil treatments allow the tree to absorb the protectant or insecticide through its roots. Precision Tree is experienced with this relatively new method of pest and insect control. Depending on the type of infestation, our trained specialists may recommend either trunk or soil injections to protect your plants. Precision Tree serves the entire Colorado Springs, CO area. Call us today for a quote on tree spraying or any of our other services, including tree removal, trimming, and stump grinding.
